Use Of GPS Technology For Value Addition In Quality Of Human Life

WHERE DO WE ( INDIAN) STAND?

It is a well known fact that GPS plays a vital role in various military applications. To the people of developed nation gradually it is turning out to be a great technological tool for value addition in various different aspects of their life. In that perspective where do we stand?First let me explain in brief the various applications of this wonderful technology in different walk of our life.

USE IN AGRICULTURE :
Equipment built with the help of GPS system and installed in tractors can be used to determine where to fertilize or spray insecticide, using map of the field. It can be used for automatic guidance of tractors and other vehicles and the vehicles almost becomes self driven piece of equipments. It is very difficult to drive in straight line in night and this equipment really allows them to do so.

USE IN CONSTRUCTION & CONCRETE BUSINESS:
GPS technology is used to navigate bulldozers and decrease the amount of time needed to fill the dirt. Bulldozers are equipped with light bars which use arrows to instruct operators how to position their blades in conformance with a particular grade plan.In concrete trucking business technology can be used to transmitdata from sensors aboard a truck directly to a dispatcher. It is also used aspreventive measures against concrete truck rolling over on the highways.

AUTOMOTIVE :
Its use in automotive navigation is nothing new , but in this field also it is providing great help to the drivers by providing increased traffic detection capabilities. In that case if someone is coming to a traffic jam or accident, whatever it might be , GPS may try to route around it. And while navigation devices could direct passengers to turn right or go straight , they now are being equipped with street names and specific destinations.Apart from these it has so many interesting and innovative applications.Out of these I am mentioning few here….A navigation system intended to guide bombs to their targets may soon help Alzheimer's patients find their way home.Researchers who are tinkering with the same technology - the Global Positioning System - say it also can be used to guide visitors through museums.Other innovators plan to use it to beam mobile-phone ads to specific locations, to enable stores and restaurants to lure hip wireless customers who are strolling in their neighbourhoods. The GPS already is essential gear for sailors and wilderness hikers and a navigation aid for millions of drivers. One big innovator, the corporate technology unit of Germany's Siemens AG, is working on a system to send text messages to precise locations rather than to individual mobile phones.Any GPS-compatible phone that is passing through the coordinates would receive the message.Siemens envisions a sort of electronic Post-It note on your mobile phone. In addition to touting neighbourhood retailers, it could help guide visitors through cities and museums.Information about important buildings or a museum's artworks and exhibits would pop up when the viewer stepped in front of them. So, this fentastic technology has unlimited applications to make our life more smooth and we can utilise our time in more efficient manners. Now work is already in progress to have a separate frequency for civilian uses. Very soon it is going to be in operation.
Where do we stand?
Do we find out of many applications mentioned above , available for us?
